Felixstowe and District Amateur Radio Society Shack
FDARS Shack established in 2017

FDARS Shack

Situated on the former RAF Wireless Communications site & USAF Station 369 at Foxhall, Foxhall Road, Ipswich IP10 0AH

In November 2017, Felixstowe and District Amateur Radio Society purchased a 40ft shipping container, specifically to convert into a modern amateur radio shack.
Since it's arrival on site in January 2017 and it's grand opening in 2019, the shack has evolved and is one of the only club owned radio shacks in East Anglia (possibly the UK!?)

What's in the FDARS shack

FDARS has sought to incorporate as much of the amateur radio hobby as possible into the shack.

There is a trailer mast and a fixed lattice mast, a wide variety of connected antennas (many more in the shack store!) these are as follows:

40/80m dipole, 20/30m dipole, 80m end fend long wire, 2m/70cm collinear, 2m Yagi, 4m j-pole and a 6m 5 element Yagi.

Our radios include

An ex PMR 70cm FM
Yaesu FT1000MP HF multi-mode
transceiver
Yaesu FT710 HF/6m/4m multi-mode transceiver

RAF Martlesham Heath & USAF Station 369

Home to Suffolk Aviation Heritage Group (SAHG) museum  - developed to promote a wider understanding, of the county’s vast aviation related history.
Together with informative displays and special exhibitions, visitors are able to explore previously unrecorded aspects of aviation history.

Situated off Foxhall Road, Ipswich IP10 0AH - sit three large masts, easily seen from miles around. These are three of the remaining six microwave masts installed by the USAF during the Cold War.

Prior to the USAF occupation, the site had been RAF since 1916, home to the A&AEE and the Wireless Telegraphy Station, a building lost to time.

Felixstowe and District Amateur Radio Society is proud to have our shack situated at this historic place, and uphold the tradition of wireless communication on the site.

We hold two special event stations each year, RAF Airfields and International Museums. Operating with our two club callsigns GX4ZFR and GB1FOX. We also provide an interactive display of military radios from WWI, WWII to present, at the SAHG Military Weekend.
